In the midst of the devastation of World War II, the United Nations created the Department of Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). It was created to ensure lasting peace and the formation of connections between people and countries. The first directive of UNESCO was the restoration of schools, museums, libraries and other important cultural and intellectual places after the war.
The main aim of UNESCO is to recognise and protect spaces of either physical or cultural significance and value. There are currently 1031 World Heritage Sites (January 2016), representing countries from all around the world, the number has tripled over the past 20 years, increasing more than at any other time during the existence of the department.
My attitude to the WHS is rather indifferent, I’m not particularly interested in them, I do not collect them, nor do I go out of my way to visit them. My visits to the sites listed below are more likely to have been by coincidence than connected to any desire to see the place as a result of it having appeared on the WHS list.
